Ultimate Metamorphosis
~ Miquel Martí i Pol
Translated from Catalan by Wayne Cox and Lourdes Manyé i Martí

Maybe it will be a bird that has stopped
its flight forever, maybe a sprig
of rosemary that strangely blooms
all year and every year, maybe a persistent
and tenacious note that everyone hears,
maybe a great river of tranquil water.
Maybe the silence, this heavy silence
of right now, maybe it will be the darkness
maybe the oblivion, subtle, invading,
that emanates from the earth and uproots
the stump and frees it, and does not rot
the branches and the leaves. Anything
that does not destroy that which lives
and I love so much, that does not disturb
friendly people, that does not blur
the clear, deep eyes of young girls.
Anything that does not turn the fire
to ashes, that does not diminish the drive
to live and love; any gesture
that does not leave any trace, any fear.

I will be ready, clean and tidy,
with my eyes open wide and my hands empty.
