Fragments from The Diary of the Waning Moon
~ Abutsu-ni
Translated from Japanese by Edwin O. Reischauer

The shore wind is cold on my travel clothes.
In the drizzling sky of the Godless Moon, snow too
is falling.

Your subdued voice is low, cuckoo.
When, high in the clouds, will you proclaim your
name?

Between the pines of the shore hills on the
eastern road
Even the waves rise in the image of flowers.
